As August winds down, so does summer in Thornton, Colorado. The nights are starting to get shorter, but until the fall crisp air enters, we have many hot days ahead of us. As summer winds down we want to make sure that we follow some end of summer air conditioning tips to ensure that your AC kicks up next summer. Call us for any AC maintenance.
Change Your Filters Your air filters have been working hard all summer, capturing dust, pet dander, bacteria, pollen and who knows what else. Instantly improve air quality and energy efficiency by exchanging them for fresh, clean air filters.
Remove Debris Around Your Outdoor Unit Make sure there is at least 3’ of clear space around your outdoor condenser at all times. This gives it room to breathe and helps reduce the amount of dirt that gets into the condenser, reducing its efficiency.
Clean Your Outdoor Unit A clean air conditioner is an efficient air conditioner, so clean the unit with a soft brush and water from the hose to keep your power bills low. Try not to bend the fins during cleaning, but if you do bend a few, you can straighten them by running a butter knife between each of them.
Clear The AC Condensate Drain If your AC condensate drain gets clogged, the water can back up into the air conditioner unit and cause serious problems. Avoid an unwanted repair visit by making sure the condensate drain is clear.
Clean Vents & Returns Cleaning your vents and air returns takes only a few minutes but can significantly improve your home’s air flow and comfort. All it takes is a microfiber cloth!
Check For Drafts & Air Leaks If you suspect your home has air leaks or drafts, hold a piece of toilet paper up to areas where you think the leaks are. If the TP blows in the wind, you’ve found a draft. Seal leaks with caulk or expanding foam spray.
Check Your Attic Insulation Insufficient insulation will lead to wasted energy and wasted money, so check that your attic insulation is sufficient. All you need to do is give it a quick once-over; if you can see the attic floor joists through the insulation, there isn’t enough and you’ll need to have more installed.
Making sure to complete your end-of-summer AC checklist is important to maintain your home comfort, but it is not enough to replace your seasonal maintenance visit. When the temperature starts dropping, you’ll still want to call Cozy Comfort to perform tune-up service on your heat pump or furnace. Not only will this ensure your heating system is ready for the winter chill, it will ensure your power bills stay as low as possible throughout the heating season.
