Do you have a whole-home humidifier in your Thornton, Colorado home? If you do, did you remember to shut off your humidifier for the summer? Read on to discover why you should have a whole-home humidifier in Thornton, Colorado, but also how to turn it off for the summer.
Shut Off Your Whole Home Humidifier for Summer
Turning your central humidifier off after heating season is a task that is easy to forget. If don’t remember to turn off your central humidifier, though, you may end impeding your air conditioning
unit’s ability to properly cool your home. Air conditioning units are designed to both cool and dehumidify the air that they pull in since the air tends to be much more humid in the summer. If your central humidifier is trying to add moisture into the air at the same time that your air conditioning unit is trying to remove it, though, your air conditioning unit will not be able to function properly.
How to Turn Off Your Whole-Home Humidifier
Start by turning the humidistat on your central humidifier to the “off” position (or the position with the lowest percent of relative humidity, depending on the model that you have). You can typically find the humidistat installed above your humidifier on the return air plenum, though sometimes a central humidifier’s humidistat will be installed on the wall near your thermostat.
After you have turned off your humidifier’s humidistat, you will next want to turn the bypass duct damper on the humidifier to the “Summer” position or close it off entirely depending on the model that you have. It is important to note, though, that some central humidifier models do not have bypass duct dampers, meaning that you may be able to skip this step entirely.
Turning off the water supply to your central humidifier is the final step in shutting it off for the summer. If you aren’t sure how to cut off the water to your central humidifier, simply find the copper or plastic water line that is connected to your humidifier, follow it back until you find a valve, then turn the valve counterclockwise until it is all the way shut off.
